Department of Social Psychology
General Information
History
Iğdır University Department of Psychology was established within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on June 16, 2011 with the decision of the Higher Education Executive Board. On July 25, 2014, four main disciplines were established within the department and the academic infrastructure of the department was strengthened. The Department of Psychology conducts studies in areas such as human development, social behavior, clinical psychology, health psychology, and cognitive psychology.
Psychology Department Program Outcomes
1. To have a comprehensive knowledge of the historical development, basic concepts, theories and research methods of psychology.
2. To have knowledge about the subfields of psychology (clinical psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, etc.).
3. To gain the ability to apply psychological research methods.
4. To gain the ability to use psychological measurement tools.
5. To gain the ability to follow and critically evaluate current developments in the field of psychology.
6. To gain the ability to act in accordance with ethical principles.
7. To develop effective communication skills.
8. To gain competence in individual and team work.
9. To gain career planning and professional development skills in the field of psychology.
Language / Type of Education
The Department of Psychology is not currently accepting students. Therefore, there are no undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. However, the Department of Psychology aims to accept students and offer academic programs in this field in the future.
Infrastructure Facilities
The Department of Psychology is not currently enrolling students, but academic studies and research are being carried out. There are no laboratories and practical applications in the department, but when the department opens in the future, it is planned to provide applied education in areas such as clinical psychology and experimental psychology.

Double Major/Minor Programs
Double Major Program: It provides students with the opportunity to earn an additional undergraduate degree in a field of interest outside their primary area of study. Through this program, students can complete coursework in two distinct departments and graduate with diplomas in both fields, broadening their academic and professional qualifications.
Minor Program: It allows students to take a specified number of courses in an area of interest outside their primary field of study. Upon completing the minor program, students receive an official certificate in that area; however, this does not equate to a second undergraduate diploma.

Exchange Programs
It offers students the opportunity to study at another university, either domestically or abroad, for a designated period. Through these programs, students gain the chance to experience different cultures, improve their foreign language skills, and acquire valuable international academic experience. The most common exchange programs include Erasmus+, Mevlana, and Farabi.

Career
Purpose of the Department: The aim of the Department of Psychology is to teach students the theoretical foundations of psychology and equip them to understand, analyze, and address human behaviors and psychological issues. The department strives to develop students not only in theoretical knowledge but also in psychological practice and research. Psychology students are trained to gain competence in various fields of psychology, guided by scientific thinking and ethical values, and to become individuals who contribute positively to society.
Current Status and Future of the Department: The Department of Psychology at Iğdır University is not currently accepting students and is solely focused on academic studies. The future of the department will take shape with the initiation of student admissions, paving the way for education in various subfields of psychology. At present, efforts are being made to strengthen the educational infrastructure, expand practical training opportunities, and increase the academic staff. The department is expected to actively begin admitting students in the near future.
Professions Under the Field: Psychology graduates acquire the competencies to work in various domains of psychology, including:
- Clinical Psychologist: Managing psychological treatment processes for individuals by establishing their own clinics or working in healthcare settings.
- Counseling Psychologist: Providing therapy services in schools, workplaces, family therapy, and individual counseling.
- Social Worker: Participating in social service projects within governmental or private sectors.
- Forensic Psychologist: Working in prisons, courts, or on criminal psychology cases.
- Health Psychologist: Offering psychological support in hospitals and rehabilitation centers.
- Educational Psychologist: Guiding students through their psychological development processes in educational institutions.
- Industrial and Organizational Psychologist: Addressing employee motivation, workplace mental health, and human resource issues in corporations.
- Researcher: Conducting psychological research and contributing to academic and scientific advancements.
Job Opportunities: Psychology graduates' employment opportunities vary based on their chosen specialties. Graduates can serve in diverse roles across government and private sectors. There is significant demand in fields such as psychological counseling, clinical psychology, educational psychology, and forensic psychology. Additionally, psychologists are highly sought after in healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, and educational organizations. Career prospects improve substantially for graduates who pursue postgraduate education to gain expertise in their chosen specialization.
